Do you have nail fungus?

Do You Have Thick, Yellow, or Crumbly Toenails?

Are you embarrassed about getting your feet out during the hot summer months?

Do you avoid getting your feet out on holiday because of how your nails look?

If your toe nails are thick, yellow, or crumbling, you might have a fungal infection. But what is fungal infection and how can you get rid of it? Let's explore your options.

What is nail Fungus?

Fungal nail is an infection that gets in through cracks in the nail or cuts on the skin. When present, it can change the colour and texture of the nail often making the nail thicker. In some cases, fungal nail can hurt. As the toes are often warm and damp, this is the perfect breeding ground for fungus.

If left untreated, an infection could spread to other toe nails, skin, or even your fingernails.

What does Toenail Fungus look like?

Signs of toenail fungus include:

  • Thicker, discoloured toenails (often yellowish)
  • Spongy or crumbly texture under the nail
  • Nails that become paper-thin and may detach from the nail bed
  • Soreness in the affected area
  • Appearance of yellow spots under the nail

Treatment Options for Toenail Fungus

(A GP diagnosis is required before commencing laser)

1. Topical Ointments:
Anti-fungal creams can help stop the spread of the infection. However, they are more effective when used with other treatments, such as laser.

2. Oral Medication:
Prescribed by a doctor, oral medication can treat fungal infections but may cause liver or kidney issues if used long-term.

3. Laser Treatment:
Laser treatment is often the best and quickest option for fungal infections.

Here’s how it works:

How Laser Treatment Works

  • The laser light is flashed into the infected nails, creating heat that kills     the fungus.
  • Multiple treatments are necessary: at least 4 for mild infections, and possibly 8 or more for severe cases.
  • Each session lasts about 15-30 minutes, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, prices starting from £75 per session.
  • Nails may need to be filed down before treatment to thin and shorten them.
  • You may feel a hot pinprick sensation during the treatment but it is very tolerable.

Improving Your Chances of Success

To prevent reinfection and improve treatment success, follow these steps:

  • Using over the counter Daktarin every day at home alongside the laser to keep any fungal activity dormant
  • Wash socks and stockings at 60 degrees to kill fungus.
  • Bring clean socks or open toe shoes to your appointment.
  • Spray footwear with anti-fungal spray or wash them at high temperatures.
  • Keep feet clean and dry.
  • Avoid covering nails with varnish, gel or acrylic; let them breathe.
  • Keep nails clipped short.
