Acne scarring

Scarring from acne breakouts is a common cause of concern for our patients, causing colour or texture changes to the skin. A common misconception is that acne only affects young adults, but it can also continue into later adult life, with scarring having a significant impact on an individual’s confidence and self-esteem.

Acne does not always result in scarring, but it is generally caused when the surface acne moves deeper into the facial tissue. The production of collagen helps to repair the skin but can often result in a difference in appearance on the surface of the skin. The amount of collagen produced during the healing process can vary, sometimes resulting in less or more collagen than the required amount. This can present different results, including depressions or holes in the skin, rippled or raised scars.

Atrophic acne scars occur when the amount of collagen produced during healing is inadequate. They often appear on the face, giving the appearance of holes or indents in the skin or rippled scars. Hypertrophic scars are caused by excess collagen production during the healing process. They are more common on the chest and back and are raised from the skin surface to create an uneven texture.

We can treat acne scarring using safe techniques that will restore the natural texture and tone of your skin. Following your initial consultation, we will create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to your concerns, which may involve using medical grade skincare, IPL, chemical peels and dermal fillers.
